Festival Profile

The Southern Bohemian pond landscape is one of the most picturesque and one of the oldest cultural centres in Europe. Numerous castles, medieval towns, romantic rivers and at least one thousand ponds -still used for fish-farming of carp and other species- dot this quaint area.

The largest city is České Budějovice (Budweis), known for Budweiser beer, but it is also a university town and an important industrial centre. Southern Bohemia is dominated by well-known places, which are partly UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Český Krumlov (Krumlov) with its curious medieval centre built around a river bend.  A perfect setting for a choir meeting, connecting people with culture, history and nature.

Budweis has a long musical tradition and is well known today for of its excellent youth choirs. The village Otradovic, near Budweis, is closely related to the baroque organ player and composer (and innkeeper!) Adam Václav Michna, whose best known composition is the Missa Sancti Venceslai, the patron saint of Bohemia. His lifework includes 5 additional masses, one tedeum and two song books with songs for four and five voices.

The concerts for the Cantate Budweis will be held in extraordinary concert halls in Budweis and Krumlov as a very special event should.

The programmes offer highly attractive concert options in a varied selection of countries, cities and interesting venues in which to sing and make new contacts in a truly international ambience. The cities of Barcelona, Amsterdam, Paris, Prague, Girona, Munich or Vienna are high in our annual agenda of festivals, concerts and meetings for the world of choirs. The schedule begins with the New Year Festival in Paris and its unique choir concerts at UNESCO and the New York Choral Exchange in New York City; in March we move to Holland and its Cantate Amsterdam and then to Germany for the Cantate Bavaria in Munich; in spring choirs can meet for concerts during the Cantate Adriatica in San Marino, Italy or venture to the U.S., for a major Choir Festival in Vermont, conveniently close to major North American attractions. In mid-autumn, Spain is our venue of choice for the Choral Festival Cantate Barcelona in the Barcelona area. November and December are full of activity with two large festivals during Advent in Prague and Vienna, thus bringing our choral year to a close. Music Contact International offers also the possibility to organize tailor-made Tours for Choirs that can include and itinerary of concerts, visits and meetings of international Choirs in characteristic venues of great cities. An interesting workshop is also available in Prague for choirs wishing to develop and acquire new techniques.
